Austin Gems: Past and Present

Austin is an ever-changing city, and that’s part of the reason we love it. We’ve seen many Austin classics come and go – even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic. But while we’ve lost some favorites, the city is always adapting and changing, and there’s never been more to explore.

Wick has been operating in Austin for more than two decades. We’re experts at the art of sampling taco joints, fusion finds and funky shops to find what deserves the title of an Austin gem. Whether you’re an Austin native looking for some nostalgia, or a newcomer to the city wanting to check out the local favorites, this list offers a snapshot of both.

Food
If we had to pick just one thing we love most about our fabulous city, it would be the food. Wendy, our account supervisor and resident restaurant critic, says Lustre Pearl on Rainey Street was the epitome of food and atmosphere before it was renovated. “Rainey Street district is like no other! The bungalow-houses-turned-bars cannot be found in any other city. Lustre Pearl was one of the originals, but they removed the bungalow house and built a more modern location in its place,” she said. While you can still visit – they literally moved the whole bungalow house to a new location – it’s just not quite the same, and we’re still mourning the loss of its one-of-a-kind vibe in a fantastic location.

Fusion is a hallmark of dining in Austin. Burger Tex was one of the first fusion restaurants here, blending Texas fare with Korean flavors. While we’ll always miss those fresh buns and bulgogi burgers, this one has a happy ending – the owner decided to close shop and retire to spend more time with family. Our senior project manager/producer Mandy recommends you go to Chi’Lantro BBQ for the same fix. There are multiple locations in Austin, but no matter which one you go to, you have to try the kimchi fries.

Oh, Sway. This Thai/Australian fusion restaurant on South First had our design hearts singing. From the logo to the atmosphere, everything was designed beautifully, and the food was irresistible. “It was my go-to place to take out-of-towners,” said Shoshanna, the director of marketing operations here at Wick. There is still a Sway in operation in Westlake Hills, but even though the original location on South First has closed it will always be fondly remembered. “Now the nearby fusion place I go to is Loro,” she said, “Their food is casual, creative and awesome.” Loro is an Asian smokehouse that offers a killer happy hour.

Thrift
Thrift shopping is basically a sport in Austin. Rave on Vintage was one of the staples of the scene, with pristine midcentury modern furniture to swoon over. Sadly, Rave On was a casualty of the recent pandemic, with the owners choosing to close their doors and pursue other passions. According to Aly, our digital marketing manager and avid thrifter, “Rave on Vintage was the BEST place for vintage furniture in near-perfect condition. Plus, the owner was fun to talk to – he dreamed of owning a tiki bar.”

While Rave On will always have a special place in our hearts, there are still plenty of places to get your thrifting fix in the city. Top Drawer Thrift is a favorite at Wick, with a high-end selection of antiques, furniture and clothing. And no thrift list would be complete without mentioning Room Service Vintage. Even if you don’t plan to purchase anything, this shop is packed floor-to-ceiling with interesting finds that range from velvet coats to funky art pieces. Make sure to check out their Instagram page – they sell some of their best pieces this way!

Fun
Between the live music scene, downtown and outdoor activities like hiking the greenbelt or paddle boarding on the lake, living in Austin is less “what should we do” and more “what should we do today.Dart Bowl was a favorite for years – not only is bowling good, cheap, wholesome fun, but the bar and grill used to serve some of the best enchiladas in Austin (at least according to our accountant, Jason). Sadly, they had to shut down their lanes, but you can still have the same brand of fun at Peter Pan Mini Golf. It’s a great time for the whole family, or BYOB and stay out late for a more adult vibe.

Dinner and a movie? Yes, please! Alamo Drafthouse is a weekend staple for many Austinites, including Kelsey, our senior account manager who loves theatre in any shape and form. “Alamo Drafthouse Ritz was one of my favorites, but let’s be honest, it was kind of old,” she confessed, “But it was a historic theater on 6th street, and had a lot of the sing-along parties, including the annual Elf quote-along during the holidays.” Thankfully, her second-favorite location, Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, is still in operation. With a prime location within walking distance of several restaurants and bars, plus Lick, a unique ice cream parlor, it’s hard to beat.
