Living in Texas means we don’t typically expect a traditional white Christmas (except for that time the snowpocalypse hit), but we have our own versions of holiday fun. Especially living in Austin, there are tons of unique places to visit and sights to see this time of year – both in and around the city. It’s one of the reasons we love to call this city home.
Here’s our hand-picked list of must-dos to get festive once the cooler weather hits. Even if you don’t call Austin home, hopefully it inspires you to discover parts of your own city you may have overlooked.
Twinkling Lights
Is there anything better than enjoying a hot mug of cocoa while driving around the neighborhood to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ at the lights? We don’t think so! And around here, the light displays are Texas-sized for even more enjoyment.
Buda Trail of Lights | Everyone knows about Austin’s Trail of Lights, but the one in Buda is a locals-only secret. With a less-crowded, laid-back atmosphere, you can take your time strolling the trails, enjoying cocoa and kettle corn along the way.
Santa’s Ranch | Located in New Braunfels, this drive-through light display is over a mile long. Complete with music and snack pit-stops, it’s the perfect way to spend an evening.
37th Street Lights | In the “Keep Austin Weird” tradition, this unofficially official light display is one you have to see. While you can drive down the street, it’s best to take your time strolling on foot – some of the best parts aren’t visible from the street, like the stuffed animal petting zoo.
Holiday Shopping
Around here, you’ll find plenty of locally made jewelry, house-roasted coffees and unique trinkets that are perfect as gifts for loved ones – especially during the holidays, when markets and bazaars are at their peak.
Blue Genie Art Bazaar | Get all of your shopping done at once at this indoor market. Filled with a variety of vendors, you can find funky art, classy jewelry, decadent body scrubs and more – and it’s all made by local artisans.
Armadillo Christmas Bazaar | This bazaar focuses on fine art produced by local award-winning artists, so you’re sure to find something that calls to you. You can also enjoy live music, a full bar and a festive, lively atmosphere.
Festive Entertainment
When you’re in the mood to be entertained, there’s plenty of options to keep the whole family occupied! Maybe send the family out so Santa can get some gift wrapping done?
A Christmas Carol at ZACH Theatre | This classic holiday tale is taken up a notch with a musical score that spans all genres and eras. Great for the whole family, you could dress up and go out for dinner to make a full evening of it.
Lighted Christmas Parade | Produced by the city of Bastrop, this nighttime spectacular is not to be missed! For one night only, over 100 participants will light the streets with floats decked out in dazzling, sparkling lights.
Gingerbread Workshops | At Thinkery, kids of all ages can put their creativity – and building skills – to the test by creating their own gingerbread house! Even better? The gingerbread comes from La Mexicana Bakery, so it’s tasty, too!
Just for Grown-Ups
Get a sitter for the kids and head out for a night of adults-only festive fun! In Austin, you have multiple themed bars to choose from, so head on over to enjoy the vibes and drinks.
Lala’s Little Nugget | At Lala’s, it’s Christmas year-round! Decked out in floor-to-ceiling décor, they specialize in all things holiday. Enjoy themed drinks, an old-school juke box and mouthwatering food.
Miracle on 5th Street | Every December, The Eleanor is completely transformed into an extreme Christmas display. Just look for the candy cane striped entrance by the Roosevelt Room to enter a world of wonder, where you can snap a pic on Santa’s throne and enjoy curated cocktails.
