Wick’s 12 Days of Giving: Local Businesses to Support

‘Tis the season of giving, y’all! In honor of the holiday and general recognition of the super cool place we get to call home, we’re celebrating by sharing 12 quintessential Austin businesses and nonprofit organizations that we hope both inspire and delight you as much as they do us. At the very least, it’s a healthy dose of that famous Austin vibe and heart we all love.

Central Texas Food Bank | No one should go hungry any time of the year, but the holidays can be especially hard. The Central Texas Food Bank helps fight hunger in our areas. Last year alone, they provided more than nearly 54 million meals to families in need. They could use a gift of an online donation – just $1 provides eight meals to families who need it.

Succulent Native | When you think of Texas, you probably think of cowboy boots, rodeos and cacti. You can send a genuine Texas succulent to your plant-loving friend, or get a gift card for them to pick one out themselves. Or get one for yourself! Either way, you’ll be supporting a small, much-loved Austin business.

The Refuge | The Refuge is an Austin-based nonprofit that provides a safe, therapeutic community for young survivors of sex trafficking. Your donation will go a long way to helping these girls heal. You can donate online, help support a cottage for the girls to live in or purchase items from The Refuge shop.

HayleyCakes and Cookies | If you’ve ever been to a party in Austin, you’ve probably seen the adorable, colorful, delicious cookies by HayleyCakes — regular and gluten-free! They’re truly an Austin original that you can have delivered right to your door, wherever you live.

Terra Toys | This quirky shop made their debut in 1978 and is now the largest toy store in Texas. Visiting the shop in person is a fabulous way to spend the afternoon, and they have imaginative gift options. But, never fear, they also have an awesome online shop.

Ann Richards School Foundation | As a woman-owned business, we have a special place in our hearts for the Ann Richards School Foundation. This nonprofit raises funds and forms partnerships to help young women by advancing their education and creating opportunities for girls who might otherwise be held back from achieving their full potential.

Medici | Coffee runs in our blood, and Medici is some of the best in Austin. It’s a great place to hang out with friends or fuel your content-writing binges. You can also purchase their delicious blends online to give to your coffee-loving friends and family.

Austin Art Garage | Austin is brimming with artistic talent – just take a look at some of the famous murals you’ll find throughout the city! No matter whether you’re looking for that unique Austin ambiance, or something more traditionally compelling, you’ll find it at the Austin Art Garage.

Con’ Olio | Con’ Olio was the very first premium olive oil tasting bar in Austin. It’s exactly the kind of upscale, funky place we love. Similar to a high-end winery, Con’ Olio provides both quality and amazing variety. You can shop their products online — think tasty pairings or dark chocolate truffles. Or even subscribe to their monthly Olive Oil & Vinegar Club.

Austin Pets Alive | Who can resist a precious puppy? Austin Pets Alive does fabulous work and is one of the main reasons Austin is able to be a no-kill city. If you’re in the area, they can always use more volunteers to walk dogs or care for the kitties. If you’re not an Austinite, donations are always needed.

Black Pearl Books | What’s better under the tree than a great read? Winter is an especially good time to curl up with a great book or learn something new. You can support a smart, independent, minority-owned bookstore by purchasing your books from the actual or virtual shelves of Black Pearl Books. Don’t worry – they ship all throughout the U.S.

HomeAid Austin | Homelessness continues to be a serious issue in our community and many others, and it’s something no one should have to experience. The Austin branch of HomeAid works to help the transitionally homeless by building safe and dignified housing for those who need it. You can help support their cause by donating online, shopping at their store or even engaging with their social channels.

We hope you found something on this uniquely Austin list that you love. The whole Wick family wishes you and yours a very, merry holiday season!
